The art exhibition “To the Sound of the Bell” is a depiction of religious architecture, while at the same time a study of the Greek soul.
Small chapels, roadside shrines, humble whitewashed churches with blue domes, solitary and remote, stand resilient against time. Scattered throughout the Greek countryside, they are a living repository of our cultural wealth and heritage.
Built from stone, earth, and water, coated in lime, without ornamentation or elaborate icon screens, they await the passerby—the weary, the sorrowful, the desperate, the persecuted, the lonely—anyone seeking comfort, strength, protection, and hope, or simply offering a prayer of gratitude.
These small churches represent the meeting point of heaven and earth in an eternal, silent prayer. They offer consolation, companionship through the flickering oil lamp as a symbol of hope, and the gentle glow of candles embracing the soul. They embody devotion, humility, and patience in the face of time’s decay, their worn walls breathing alongside nature. Their simplicity bows before the divine essence. They carry the sweet melancholy of Holy Week, transformed into light in anticipation of the Resurrection.
The sound of their bells—devotional, gentle, sorrowful, peaceful, soothing, compassionate, moving, awakening, and joyful—offers a privileged connection to God. Their symbolic presence conveys divine reflection. Their sound brings joy to the heart, serenity to the soul, and awakens religious faith.
The exhibition “To the Sound of the Bell” is technically multifaceted. Works of painting, sculpture, mosaic, photography, jewelry, and decorative objects are inspired by a shared theme and Easter symbolism.
These creations, rich in expressive immediacy, convey lived experience, activate personal memory, and present balanced compositions with clarity of design, descriptive skill, and nostalgic sensitivity. Naturalistic elements prevail, without embellishment, highlighting traditional religious architecture alongside elements of folk art and tradition.
Through expressive power, truth is sought along a luminous and hopeful path. The modest and humble image conveys its intrinsic strength. Universal concerns, meanings, and questions become accessible, offering emotional warmth and shelter.
The 31 participating artists, each with unique experiences and diverse techniques, come together under a shared theme, expressing a collective spirit and conveying a significant legacy of values and common visions. They approach the subject with sensitivity, emotion, and respect. Their compositions arise from inner intensity and radiate calm endurance, light, hope, generosity, and refined feeling.
The sacred space, symbolically charged with harmony and balance, embraces human emotions and the coordinates of the soul. A sense of devotion prevails; inner reflection deepens; emotion becomes profound and spontaneous, leading to contemplation and self-awareness.
The dazzling white and endless blue of the sky reach a sublime state, embodying ultimate harmony and bliss. Time, intangible and eternal, is imprinted upon the materiality of nature and humanity.
An Easter journey through small chapels, where humble light shines—celebrated by poets and scholars:
“THE LITTLE CHURCH”
“High upon the mountain there stands a lonely chapel, its bell does not ring, it has no chanter nor priest.
A dim oil lamp and a stone cross are its only humble adornments.
Yet the passerby, as he goes by, pauses and reverently bows,
kissing the white cross with devotion.
Upon that cross lies a sacred image, written in blood by God Himself, and worshipped by the people.”
Aggelos Vlachos (1838–1920), writer, diplomat, politician
The exhibition “To the Sound of the Bell” is an invitation to a journey of personal “Resurrection,” as each person experiences, awaits, and envisions it.
Happy Easter to all!
