the art exhibition entitled “The Age of Gamiliona” will open at Andie Art Gallery,
Farantaton 17, Athens Tower.
“The Age of Gamiliona” is a highly original and engaging visual arts exhibition of sculpture and fashion,
inspired by ancient Greece and the month of marriage.
The exhibition curator, Annita Patsouraki – Art Historian, states:
“In ancient Greece there existed a calendar based on religious celebrations. Each city-state used its own calendar, with different names for the months.
In the Attic Calendar, the seventh month (mid-January to mid-February) was called Gamelion. It was dedicated to the gods Zeus and Hera and took its name from the festival ‘Gamelia’ or ‘Gamela’, during which the Sacred Marriage of the two gods was honored. Hence, the festival was also known as Theogamia. Hera was the protector of marriage.
Three additional deities associated with the successful outcome of marriage were also honored: Aphrodite, Artemis, and Peitho.
Marriage in ancient Greece was one of the most important institutions, signifying social recognition and respect toward the Olympian gods.
The wedding ceremony took place at the bride’s home. The bridal garment was usually a simple white chiton, a color symbolizing joy. At the back of the garment there was a very tight knot, which the groom untied during the ceremony. The groom, dressed in white and wearing a wreath on his head, took the bride by the hand, thus sealing the marriage.
The homes of both bride and groom were decorated with wreaths made of laurel and olive leaves. Guests drank wine and ate meat, as well as a sweet made of flour, honey, and sesame, symbolizing abundance and fertility, along with bread, walnuts, and dried figs.
Wedding wishes focused on prosperity, fertility, and the happiness of the couple: ‘Έρρωσθε και Ευδαιμονείτε — May you be healthy and happy.”
