Curatorial Note for the Exhibition
“On the Wave”
"I walk beside the waves,
Holding your hand in mine…
Together on the seashore,
Playing with seashells and kisses."
(Song by Aphrodite Manou & Giannis Fertis)
The exhibition "On the Wave" is a celebration of the beauty of carefree summer days, the tranquil embrace of the sea, and the serenity of the soul awakened by the gentle rhythm of the shoreline.
A rich dialogue of nature unfolds before us:
Sea, sun, light, movement and stillness, sound and silence.
With refined artistic sensitivity, the exhibition captures the essence of the Greek summer—the turquoise sea, the celestial blue sky, the dazzling sunlight—where memories, images, flavours, and fragrances take shape, form, and colour. They are distilled into emotions that enrich our minds and uplift our spirits, giving deeper meaning to our lives.
Through a wide range of artistic approaches—from expressive, energetic brushstrokes to photographic realism and abstract interpretations—the element of water is portrayed as calm and transparent, in constant flow and motion, undulating or stormy; embracing us, gently approaching us, drawing us into its depths, and inviting us to follow its eternal journey.
Paintings featuring both smooth surfaces and textured reliefs emphasize the physical presence and dynamic force of water. Across every chromatic and tonal variation of the sea, the wave is adorned with the delicate white lace of its foam, reflecting the sunlight that penetrates the water, defining distances, shaping the horizon, while its graceful curved forms resonate with rhythmic energy and harmonize with our own.
Inspired sculptures, decorative clay works, functional ceramics, and jewellery crafted from authentic seashells and stones shaped by the caress of the sea convey the living atmosphere of nature and the power of water. They preserve our memories, elevate our senses, and inspire a positive state of mind.
The wave has always been inseparably linked with human existence and survival. References to it can be found in ancient Greek literature, world literature and poetry, philosophical writings, proverbs, idiomatic expressions, and folklore traditions. As an artistic subject, the wave achieved iconic status in the masterpieces of Katsushika Hokusai, whose celebrated works during the golden age of Japanese woodblock printing profoundly influenced Western art.
Throughout history, the wave has symbolized humanity's perpetual struggle, endless movement, continuous transformation, and the mysterious force of nature that carries everything along its path. It reminds us of both the fragility and resilience of life, revealing how nature can effortlessly become both our ally and our adversary, while constantly displaying its magnificent power.
Through landscapes and metaphorical visual interpretations, the exhibition "On the Wave" also invites us on an inner journey. It encourages us to surrender to the flow of life, embrace change, and rediscover the natural beauty that surrounds us.
Above all, it invites us to experience a spontaneous sense of relaxation, a joyful—even slightly indulgent—pleasure in the radiant warmth of the sun, the refreshing breeze of the waves, and the quiet optimism of summer.
Let us be carried away by the nostalgic melody of the traditional serenade:
"Upon the sea's white foam,
My beloved lies asleep.
Gentle waves, I beg of you,
Do not wake her from her sleep."
We wish you all
a wonderful summer!
