"Transmutation of Concepts"

​The Curator of the Exhibition, Annita Patsouraki – Art Historian, states:

​

"Athina Kilifi is a painter and fashion designer.

Having grown up in America, studied in Italy, and frequently visited Greece, she has accumulated knowledge, experiences, and inspiration from diverse cultural environments.

​

Dynamic, impulsive, and imaginative, with profound existential concerns, she channels her creative expression into complex images of spiritual exaltation and inner dialogue.

​

‘The Transmutation of Concepts’ is her first solo exhibition. 

The paintings, independent in subject matter, move and swirl around timeless questions concerning the human journey and evolution, as well as the influences and transformations that shape it.

​

The concept of existence, the miracle of birth, and the search for being itself are subconscious reflections and questions that she approaches through a variety of formal means, often employing allegorical undertones.

​

Organic and inorganic visual forms narrate stories through evident influences of Abstract Expressionism combined with a distinctive descriptive skill. Through a synthesis of visual expression and perceptive thought, she renders her subjects abstractly—simplifying, analyzing, and simultaneously deepening their essence. By seeking fundamental visual elements, she succeeds in expressing her aesthetic vision, transmuting familiar external manifestations of matter and living beings.

The canvas is transformed into a field of activity where the presentation of objects is cast aside. Geometric forms eloquently depict surreal references through selective abstraction and balanced formulations. Representation of form is limited, suggestive, or entirely rejected.

​

Within the language of Conceptual Art and Expressionist Abstraction, the radical transformation of an object’s substance, the presence of nature, and the change of essence that turns it into something different signify its transmutation, its evolution into a new state. This modification may be identified with beautification and spiritual elevation.

​

The explanatory titles accompanying each composition—such as Genesis, Evolution, and Mati Charm (Evil Eye Beads)—guide the viewer’s thoughts and make them an accomplice, a collaborator in the artist’s intellectual process.

​

Emotion emerges spontaneously and dominates the composition. It captures attention, surprises the viewer, and creates a unique sense of wonder. Driven by powerful inner impulses of feeling, the artist develops an aesthetic and theoretical dialogue of communication with the audience.

​

Compositions of bold color mixtures and tonal variations are lavishly distributed across the pictorial surface. The accidental forms that selectively emerge are shaped and defined by the artist with the meaning of existence and the impression of every living being. Through color, all aspects and energies of life are gathered and symbolized—an experiential invocation of existence and creation.

​

Through inner introspection and spiritual inquiry, with an emphasis on spontaneous and subconscious expression, Athina Kilifi seeks to understand herself, to search for the meaning of life, and to delve into the essence of matter.

​

She possesses an understanding and intuition of concepts, as well as a lived experience of emotions arising from transformation, transmutation, and metamorphosis—processes that take place yet are not directly depicted on the painted surface.

​

By entering the deepest recesses of her subconscious, she paradoxically succeeds in becoming the spokesperson for an entirely optimistic view of life, as masterfully described by Aristotle:

‘In all things of nature there is something of the marvelous.’”
